Bolivar @ Hollister. COC Co-CHAMPS!

Gm 19 @ Hollister 9-29-09

Won 7-0; Tristia Patton WP; 15 K

Hits: Addie Murders, Ashley Payne, Haleigh Brown, 2, RBI; Megan Vest, Double, 2 RBI; Candice Hare; Rachel Schrader 2, RBI

We scored 1 in the first, 2 in the second, 2 in the fourth, 1 in the fifth, and 1 in the sixth. We hit the ball well, up and down the lineup even though we only had 7 hits. The game plan was to put the ball in play and make things happen. We struck out 6 times, but we forced 4 errors and 2 walks. We are learning how to become “hard outs”. We are making the defenses work hard to get us out. And to compliment our offensive efforts, Tristia did a very good job of keeping hitters off balance (15K). I don’t believe Hollister was able to put a good swing on anything and hit it hard. Defensively, she had some help too. We allowed 1 hit, 1 hit by pitch, and on by error. Sarah Magaña threw one out at 2nd, Rachel Schrader made a great sliding catch and throw to double off another, and they stranded 1 runner on the night.

Back to back championships is never easy, but to see the way this group of girls has come together and really want something more is special. We felt that we could do something late in the season, and now it is here. Tonight was our most complete game of the season, at bat, in the field, and in the circle. We are very proud of the results of our work.

JV Won 5-4; Megan Elliott WP

Bolivar @ Nevada 9-24-09

Gm 18 @ Nevada 9-24-09

Lost 4-2;

Hits: Haleigh Brown; Bekah Patton; Tristia Patton;

Nevada took a 1-0 lead in the 1st after a 2 out double, stolen base and single. Bolivar tied it at 1 in the 3rd, with Tristia Patton singling. Jaelyn Halbrook ran for her stealing 2nd base, advancing to 3rd on a wild pitch and scoring on a throwing error by the catcher.

Bolivar took the lead 2-1 in the 4th when Haleigh Brown singled and Bekah Patton singled. Brown was out at the plate after a wild pitch, but Patton moved to 3rd, and scored on a delay steal.

We threatened in the 5th after a walk, an error and a fielder’s choice. Sarah Magana was called out at the plate on a squeeze play that would have extended the lead.

Bolivar had the game get away in the 6th when Nevada put 3 runs on the board and went quietly in the 7th.

We lost Sr. 3rd baseman Jessie Bruce in the bottom of the 1st to a leg fracture. It was a very difficult situation for all of us, but I was so proud to be wearing blue and gold at the end of the night. Our girls did a tremendous job of fighting through adversity. This is the type of situation that no one wants to endure. It was placed on us and we had to reach down deep. Taking the lead and holding a good Nevada team in check for 5 innings was a real indicator for this team. In the end, they found a way to push across 4 runs and we had 2. The next biggest challenge is to get on a bus drive to Hollister and play again. It is a big game for us, because we can clinch the COC championship with a win. I think we are looking forward to the challenge.

Bolivar v. Marshfield

Gm v. Marshfield 9-22-09

Win 4-1; Tristia Patton WP, 7 K

Hits: Haleigh Brown, RBI; Bekah Patton double, RBI, Jessie Bruce RBI; Sarah Magaña double;

Bolivar took a 1-0 lead in the 1st after a lead off walk and 2 stolen bases by Addie Murders and a ground out by Haleigh Brown to drive her in.

Marshfield tied it at 1 in the 3rd after a leadoff hit, sacrifice, and a 2 out hit.

Bolivar took the lead for good in the 4th. Bekah Patton led off with a walk and stole 2nd. Jessie Bruce singled, driving in Patton. Jaelyn Halbrook pinch ran for Bruce and Sarah Magaña hit a double to center. Halbrook was thrown out at the plate and we couldn’t score Magaña, but the energy level definitely changed. The 5th was quiet.

In the 6th, Marshfield led off with 2 singles, but a strikeout, a ground out and a fly out to Megan Vest in right, ended the threat. During the home half of the 6th, Haleigh Brown led off with a single and Bekah Patton doubled, driving in Brown, Bruce walked and stole 2nd and Patton scored on a wild pitch. A pitching change led to 2 loud outs as Magaña and Tristia Patton both sent outfielders deep to make plays.

The 7th was uneventful for Marshfield as the bottom of the lineup grounded out to Rachel Schrader at 2nd and Patton struck out the last 2 batters to end the game.

This was a very exciting win for the Liberators. Any time you beat Marshfield, it feels good. It also puts us right back into the thick of the COC race. 3-1 with 1 game remaining. We need some help from Reeds Spring (tonight) or Marshfield next week, to get Rogersville, but we have a chance. We were outhit tonight 5-3 but we hit the ball much better than Marshfield. Their defense made some really nice plays to keep us at 4. We took advantage of 5 walks while giving them zero. The girls are playing with confidence right now and we hope that continues.

Records: Varsity - 10-7, (3-1 COC); JV - 6-2, (3-0-1 COC)

JV- won a tough game with Marshfield 8-7. Our girls did an outstanding job tonight. We were able to get a lead and hold off Marshfield for the win. We are proud of the progress these girls are making. We are learning to adjust to different pitching styles, playing solid defense and scoring runs.

Up Next: @ Nevada 9-24-09; @ Hollister 9-29-09; v. Fair Grove 10-1-09, and @ Branson Tournament 10-3-09 (resume v. Fair Grove with a 6-0 lead in the 4th).

Bolivar v. Logan Rogersville

Gm 16 v. Logan Rogersville 9-16-09
Lost 5-3
Hits: Haleigh Brown; Bekah Patton, Jessie Bruce (2); Ashley Payne (2) 2 RBI; Sarah Magana; Tristia Patton; Rachel Schrader (2)

Bolivar led 3-1 after 1 inning. We led off the game with 2 walks and on by error to load the bases. Addie Murders scored on a delay steal of 3rd with an error on the throw to tie the game at 1. We then had runners are 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs and Ashley Payne hit a 2 run single and Magana singled. Our next scoring chance was in the 2nd as Rachel Schrader led off with a single and ended up on 3rd with 2 errors on the play. We were unable to get her across to extend the lead. Bekah Patton led off the 3rd with a single, Bruce followed with a single. We loaded the bases with 1 out and hit into a double play to end the inning.

In the 4th Tristia Patton singled and Schrader singled and Murders was hit by pitch. Again we were unable to extend the lead after loading the bases with 0 out. In the top of the 5th, Log-Rog had 2 consecutive 1 out singles then grounded into an out. With 2 outs and a 3-2 lead, Bolivar was unable to get a stop. After an intentional walk, consecutive opportunities to end the inning with the lead came up empty. These missed opportunities led to 3 more runs and Bolivar trailed 5-3. The Liberators went down in order in the 5th and 6th before putting together a 2 out rally in the 7th. The game ended with the tying run at 2nd.

Records: 9-7, (2-1 COC);

JV- fought to a 5-5 tie, scoring 4 times in the bottom of the 5th to knot the game at 5.

Liberators @ Clinton

Gm 15 @ Clinton 9-14-09

Win 6-4 Tristia Patton WP, 3 K in 2 2/3; Brittany Wood pitched 4 1/3 outstanding innings as well.

Hits: Addie Murders; Megan Vest (2), double, Haleigh Brown, 2 RBI; Bekah Patton RBI; Sarah Magana double; Rachel Schrader, RBI; Ashley Payne RBI.

Clinton took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd 2-0; Bolivar scored twice in the 4th to tie it at 2 after Murders singled and Vest doubled. Haliegh Brown and Bekah Patton both drove in a run. Clinton took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 4th and added another in the 5th. Bolivar scored again in the 6th after consecutive singles by Vest and Brown and a Clinton error.

That set the stage for another comeback win. In the 7th, trailing 4-3, Bekah Patton reached on an error and Jessie Bruce also reached on an error. Ashley Payne sacrificed and Patton scored. On the play, pinch runner Jaelyn Halbrook advanced to 3rd and scored on a throwing error to give the Liberators the lead. Sarah Magana doubled and with 2 outs, Rachel Schrader singled to drive home the 6th run. Clinton went quietly in the 7th with a ground out, strike out, walk, and foul out to end the game.

Records: 9-6, (2-0 COC)

The hitting onslaught continued into the JV game. Megan Elliott was again very tough on hitters using her defense efficiently. Every Liberator had at least a hit or a walk and Sammy Jacobson and Jaelyn Halbrook had 3 hits each.

Lost 2-1 Tristia Patton- LP 3 K
Hits: Addie Murders, Megan Vest, Haleigh Brown, RBI, Bekah Patton, Sarah Magana

We outhit Rolla 4-3 but theirs were timely. We need that big hit and can’t seem to get it. In close losses, everything is magnified. We just have to stay at it and we will learn what it takes to win.

Record 6-6

Gm 13 @ Ozark Tournament Saturday 9-12 v. Willard 2 PM (Gm 4)
Win 4-3; Megan Elliott WP; Brittany Wood -Save
Hits: Addie Murders; Haleigh Brown, RBI; Bekah Patton; Jessie Bruce; Ashley Payne, 2 RBI;

We were finally able to put multiple hits up in one inning. The bottom of the 3rd we put 4 hits up and scored 3 times to take a 4-2 lead.

Megan did a good job and gave us some very quality innings. She pitched around 6 errors and allowed 2 unearned runs; Brittany came in and finished things off. It is very important to have all of our pitchers throwing well.

Record 7-6

Gm 14 @ Ozark Tournament Saturday 9-12 v. Lebanon 3:30 PM (Gm 5)
Win 5-4 (8 innings); Tristia Patton WP; 8 K
Hits: Megan Vest, RBI; Haleigh Brown; Bekah Patton, (3), RBI; Jessie Bruce, (3), RBI; Ashley Payne (2) (2 RBI);

We played hard for 8 innings. We scored in the 3rd and Lebanon tied it up in the bottom half;
They scored 2 more in the 4th to take a 3-1 lead into the 5th.

We answered in the 6th with 2 to tie the game at 3. No one scored in the 7th. In the 8th we were able to score 2. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Ashley Payne hit a ball the pitcher made a nice play to stop and heads up baserunning forced a play at the plate. After the catcher dropped the ball, the runner from 2nd scored to give us a 5-3 lead. Lebanon scored a run with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th.

It seemed like we started playing a little harder and wanting it a little more about mid-day Saturday. We were really happy to see that. Our “hustle” improved on Saturday and that was a very good sign. We are getting better. After an 0-3 start to the season, we have won 8 of 11.

We finished the tournament 3-2 and 7th of 16. Marshfield finished 2nd, losing to Nixa in the Championship game. That will be a tough one next week, but we seem to make all of them tough.

Liberators - Buffalo

9-8-09 @ Buffalo (COC)

Win 8-2; Tristia Patton, 9 K in 5 innings of relief

Hits: Addie Murders; Rachel Schrader RBI; Bekah Patton, 3 – single, double, & HR, 3 RBI; Ashley Payne RBI; Tristia Patton RBI

We were down 2-0 after 3 when we finally got on the scoreboard with 3 consecutive walks and an infield hit by Bekah Patton. We lost a great chance to score more when we didn’t get the call on a ball that looked like it hit chalk. Ashley Payne hit what we thought was a 2 RBI single down the right field line, only to have it ruled foul. We were able to play defense and keep them off the scoreboard for the next 6 outs and then we finally broke through.

In the 6th, we led off with 2 walks and tied the game on a 1st and 3rd double steal. Then B. Patton hit a double to right which gave us the lead. Jessie Bruce was hit by pitch and we were able to score with RBIs from Ashley Payne and Tristia Patton. We tacked on in the 7th after a leadoff hit by Murders, walk by Megan Vest, passed ball, and an RBI by Rachel Schrader. Then B. Patton stepped in again and this time hit one over the left field fence for the final of 8-2.

We didn’t play our best ball, but we are learning how to play from behind and that will benefit us down the road. We are scoring when we get baserunners, we just need to maximize our chances to run the bases. The most important thing, is that we all contributed to the winning effort and we were able to get a win. The game just had that “bad” feel to it tonight. Buffalo played error free tonight and you have to give them credit. But we overcame some adversity and found ways to capitalize.

JV: Bolivar 6, Bufflao 1; I am proud of the way we compete every day.

Records: Varsity 5-4 (2-0); JV 4-2; (2-0)

Up Next: Ozark Tournament Friday 9-11 v. Lebanon and w= winner of Nixa/Skyline or l= loser of Nixa/Skyline and Saturday 9-12-09

Liberators - Reeds Spring

9-3-09 v. Reeds Spring (COC)

Win 4-3; Tristia Patton, 6 K in 8 innings

Hits: Haleigh Brown; Megan Vest, RBI; Bekah Patton, RBI; Sarah Magana;

We were down 2-0 in the 2nd when we got on by error and drew 2 walks. We stole second twice (Ashley Payne and Jonna Welch) and were able to force mistakes by the Reeds Spring defense. We scored on wild pitches and tied the game. We stayed tied with some good defense and pitching. There was a lot of excitement, just not on the scoreboard. But in the 8th that changed.

Reeds Spring started the 8th with a runner on by error. She was sacrificed to 2nd and the next hitter grounds to 3rd with the baserunner advancing to 3rd. A wild pitch allowed the runner to score. Sarah Magana led off the bottom of the 8th getting on with a catcher’s interference. She advanced to 3rd on a single by Haleigh Brown only after getting into a rundown between 2nd and 3rd. Brown took second during the rundown. Megan Vest singled, scoring Magana to tie the game at 3. With 2 outs, Bekah Patton singled in front of a diving center fielder to drive in Brown with the winning run.

Tristia did an outstanding job of scattering hits and pitching around errors. We have some work to do to clean up our defense. The mistakes we are making shouldn’t be too difficult to straighten out. Most of the time we are “pressing” by trying to do too much. We have to be able to play the game 1 out at a time at a fast pace. Other errors are happening because we aren’t in good position.

Offensively, we are putting the ball in play much better as a team. There will be nights like tonight and Tuesday (Willard) where we put it in play solidly right at people, then there will be nights like Monday (El Dorado Springs, 12 hits) where we seem to find the holes. We are running the bases hard and putting pressure on people even when we are not knocking the fences over. We are competing every time out and have had our chances in every game this year. We just needed this outcome tonight. The girls are buying into what we are doing and we learning not to “press” offensively. We like a lot of what we see on the field.

JV: Bolivar 13, Reeds Spring 5; Our younger girls are hitting the ball very well and putting pressure on defenses, they are a fun and exciting group to watch. Megan Elliott struck out 6 and wins in relief

Records: Varsity 4-4 (1-0); JV 3-2; (1-0)

Liberators - El Dorado Springs

8-31-09 v. El Dorado Springs

Win 9-5; WP – Brittany Wood, 6 K

Hits: Addie Murders, 2, Double 2 RBI; Haleigh Brown, 3, Rachel Schrader RBI; Bekah Patton, 2, RBI; Ashley Payne 2, 2 RBI; Jessie Bruce, 2; Sarah Magana, 1, 2 RBI

El Dorado jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring in each of the first two innings; Bolivar answered with 2 in the 3rd with an RBI double and another RBI on a Sacrifice fly by Rachel Schrader. Then we scored 2 more in the 4th. After Back to back singles by Payne and Bruce, Wood walked and Magana hit a sacrifice fly and Bruce then scored on a wild pitch.

In the 5th, El Dorado Springs scored 3 times taking a 5-4 lead. Bolivar answered again in the bottom half by scoring 5 times. Vest and Schrader led off with walks. Bekah Patton reached on an error and Payne doubled home 2. Jessi then singled home another run and Murders hit another single to drive in one, and Brown singled to drive in the last Bolivar run.

El Dorado Springs did not have another threat going 1, 2, 3 in the 6th. A one out hit in the 7th was erased on a Magana to Brown double play to end the game.

This was a nice way to win one at home. We had quality at bats all night, putting continuous pressure on their pitcher and their defense. We hit some balls very well, and it seemed like even when we did not, we got the bounces today. We had a couple of let downs defensively and gave up some bases that we have not been giving up. That is something we will continue to work on.

JV: El Dorado Springs 1, Bolivar 7; Our young kids are doing a great job of playing the game. The way they work and the way the prepare is a great reflection on this group.

Record: 3-3

Liberators - Ozark and Ash Grove Tournament

8-27-09 v. Ozark

Lost 5-1;

Hits: Megan Vest 2 singles; Rachel Schrader; Bekah Patton, RBI; Jessie Bruce

We tied the game 1-1 in the 4th and had the bases loaded with 1 out. Our hitter struck out and our runner was picked off 3rd to end the inning. That was a real momentum switch. We went from an opportunity to take the lead into the 5th to giving up 3 in the 5th and being down 4-1. Ozark scored again in the 7th, for a 5-1 lead. We had the bases loaded again in the 7th with 1 out, but we were unable to get anyone across.

I am encouraged because we are competing well. I am frustrated because we have not been able to get the big “at bat” when we need it. I know that it will happen, sometimes we just get impatient and try to do too much, players and coaches.

JV: Ozark 5, Bolivar 1

Records: Ozark (2-0); Bolivar (0-2)

8-29-09 @ Ash Grove Tournament (#5 Seed)

Gm #1 v. #4 Aurora

Lost 6-5

Hits: Addie Murders, Double, RBI; Haleigh Brown, RBI; Megan Vest; Rachel Schrader; Bekah Patton 2 hits, RBI; Jessie Bruce; Sarah Magana RBI

We were tied at 4 when time expired and we went to International Tie Breaker; Aurora scored twice, and we were only able to get 1.

Gm #2 v. #8 Sarcoxie

Win 7-3; Brittany Wood WP; 7 K in 4 innings; Megan Elliott 1 IP

Hits: Addie Murders, 2 hits; Haleigh Brown, 2 hits, Double, 3 RBI; Megan Vest; Ashley Payne; Sarah Magana; Jaelyn Halbrook;

We were able to get our first win of the season. Haleigh, Addie, Megan, and Ashley really stepped up to get us going early and we were able to play well enough to make it stand up.

Brittany was able to get her first Varsity win and we are proud of the progress she has made and continues to make. She is doing a very good job and we expect her to be a vital part of our pitching staff.

Gm #3 v. #6 Fair Grove (5th place game)

Win 9-4

Megan Elliott, WP; 2 2/3 IP in relief allowing 3 base runners. Megan got her first Varsity win. She came in and shut down Fair Grove. She is making good progress and is a very important part of our pitching staff and will be for years to come. We have grown to expect this kind of performance from Megan. They way she pitched this summer and has pitched so far this fall is a big lift for us.

Hits: Addie Murders, Double 2 RBI; Ashley Payne single, RBI; Bekah Patton, single; Megan Vest, single RBI; Jessie Bruce, single RBI; Sarah Magana, 2 singles, Sammy Jacobson, single;

Time limit was running out and we trailed 4-1; with a runner a second and 2 outs, Jessie Bruce singled home a run to bring the score to 4-2; Sarah Magana singled and Sammy Jacobson bunted for a hit to load the bases. Addie Murders hit a double to score 2 and tie the game. Haleigh Brown reached on an error, Ashley Payne singled, Bekah Patton walked. Megan Vest singled bring home the 8th run of the inning. We held in the bottom of the inning making the final score 9-4. We had 9 consecutive at bats with 2 outs and we stepped up to the challenge. We had been frustrated at the plate all day, it was nice to see the girls have the success they had. It could be a very positive step forward for our season.

We are getting good leadership from our seniors, Haleigh Brown, (2nd Team All District), Ashley Payne, (2nd Team All District), Jessie Bruce, (2nd Team All District), Megan Vest, Rachel Schrader, (1st Team All District/1st Team All COC), and Bekah Patton. They expect to win and that is a key ingredient to any team.

So far this year, we have played 5 games with a wide range of competition. We have been in close games every time. What we need to is the confidence that we are better than most teams and equal to the top teams. When we start playing with that kind of confidence, we will see some nice results.

Record: 2-3

09 Season Underway

Warsaw 3 (1-0), Bolivar 2 (0-1)
Addie Murders, 2-3 (double)
Bekah Patton, single
Tristia Patton, Double
Jessi Bruce, single

Tristia Patton, (0-1) 7 K

We scored in the first after Addie doubled, stole 3rd and advanced home on a throwing error by the pitcher. They scored in the 1st and then in the 2nd to take a 2-1 lead and then scored again in the 4th to push the lead to 3-1.

We had chances late in the game. We scored in the 5th to make it 3-2 but could not get the tying run across. In the 7th, Tristia hit a 2 out double and advanced to 3rd on an error but we couldn't get that run across.

Warsaw is a very good team. They were 20-4 last year losing in sectionals after losing to Bolivar in the opener at Bolivar. They return everyone and look like they could make a nice run in October if everyone stays healthy. We competed very well and I am proud of our efforts. We just need to find ways to get more runs across and get the 2 out hits.

It doesn't get any easier, we host Ozark Thursday and go to Ash Grove for a Tournament on Saturday. Monday we have El Dorado Springs at home and go to Willard Tuesday.

Team Updates

MONDAY JULY 6
Freedom

Game 1 v. Springfield Diamonds, W, 6-0; Megan Elliott WP

Hits: Taylor Hedges, Jaelyn Halbrook, Tristia Patton, Megan Elliott (double); Abby Toler
The girls did a good job on defense and Megan Elliott did another outstanding job in the circle. We hit the ball well enough and put runners on to keep pressure on the defense and score runs. This group is developing well.

Gm 2 v. Ozark Express, W, 10-2; Tristia Patton, WP

Hits: Taylor Hedges, Sammy Jacobson 2, (double, triple); Summer Rash, (triple);

This is the game we have been looking for. Tristia did a very good job in the circle. They scored a couple of cheap runs. We know they are a good offensive team and Tristia kept them off balance and our defense was solid again keeping them from getting anything serious going. Offensively, we saw their best and we were able to rattle her. We had some loud hits from Summer and Sammy that started and ended a big 6 run inning to effective end the game. The girls did a great job tonight.

Up Next: @ Meador Park Monday July 13. 6 & 7:15.

Record: 8-4-2

Liberators

Game 1 v. Panthers W 20-7

Hits: Mackenzie Austin 3singles, 1 double, Carsyn Julien 3 singles, Jenna Halbrook 4 singles, Sydney Negley 2 singles 1 double), Jaeden Sharp 2 singles, Darci Cline 2 singles 1 double, Sydnee Kirby single, Libby Vess 3 singles, Jacey Follis 3 singles, Taylor Sullivan 1 single, Lauryn Lorimor 2 singles

These young ladies did a fantastic job seeing the ball. We had many singles--which won us the game. These girls are constantly increasing their knowledge of the game and it shows on the field. Coach Jamie Halbrook

Game 2 v. Fair Grove L 8-14

Hits: Mackenzie Austin 2singles; Carsyn Julien double, Jenna Halbrook 2 singles; Sydney Negley single, double, triple; Jaeden Sharp single; Darci Cline 2 singles; Sydnee Kirby single; Jacey Follis single
We didn't come out strong like we usually do & the score showed that. FG hit the ball well. They won the game in the 1st inning. They scored 6 and we could never get a lead. I have every confidence that we will learn from this game’s experiences.

Coach Jamie Halbrook

Team Updates

Storm
Tuesday June 30 v. Norwood @ Meador, T 5-5

Hits: Haleigh Brown (double); Ashley Payne; Rachel Schrader 2 (triple); Jessi Bruce;

We were down 5-0 when we finally got on the board with 3. Haleigh Brown stepped up and hit a double scoring 2 to tie the game in the last inning. We were unable to get the winning run across. It is frustrating to play your heart out for 75 minutes and everything ends in a tie. We would have loved to play it out.

Wednesday July 1 v. Willard @ Ash Grove, L, 4-0

Hits: Haleigh Brown

We did not swing it well tonight. It was just not a good night at the ballpark.

Thursday July 2 v. Ash Grove @ Ash Grove, L 9-8

Hits: Haleigh Brown (2); Ashley Payne; Megan Vest; Rachel Schrader; Tristia Patton; Jessi Bruce; Brittany Wood;

Brittany Wood threw the ball very well tonight. She pitched 7 innings and the last 4 were under a lot of pressure. I am very proud of her efforts tonight.

This was a tough week, driving to ball parks for 1 game each night. Finally on Thursday v. Ash Grove we had a game with numerous learning opportunities. This was a game that will make us better down the road. Back and forth all game. We had 4 tie breaker innings and had opportunities to play under pressure. We had our chances and we had successes and failures. It was a great opportunity to learn who we are.

Record: 5-7-1; Up next @ Meador Park Saturday (11th) 11:30 & 12:45; @ Meador Park Tuesday 14th 6 & 7:15

Liberty
Wednesday July 1 v. Pleasant Hope, L, 8-3

Hits: Delpha Miller; Haley Rauch (triple) RBI; Taylor Sechler RBI; Haleigh Wallace; Brandi Cline (RBI)

Thursday July 2 @ Meador

Gm 1 v. Thunder, W, 4-1, Abby Toler WP, 6 strikeouts;

Hits: Taylor Sechler (2); Haley Rauch (2); Brook Townsend (2); Mikalyn Wheelbarger

Gm 2 v. Shox, L, 7-3.

Hits: Karli Duren; Haley Rauch; Brook Townsend; Brandi Cline;

The girls are learning to make adjustments at the plate and we are incorporating more phases of fastpitch, such as bunting and slapping. We are putting pressure on defenses. We need to continue to run the bases hard and play solid defense including pitching.

Up Next: v. Morrisville 5 and Pleasant Hope 7:30, Wednesday July 8; @ Meador Park Thursday 6 & 8:30

Patriots
Wednesday July 1 v. Morrisville, L, 10-1;

Sydney Julien struck out 3 and AnnaMarie McGlone struck out 4....McGlone had a single....Morrisville did a good job hitting the ball hard and we made a few mental mistakes in the field. (Nathan Rothdiener)

Thursday July 2 @ Meador

Gm 1 v. Irish, W 9 - 3 AnnaMarie McGlone pitched the win and struck out 5 in effort. sydney julien recorded a hit....we took advantage of what they gave us...which was a number of walks and errors in the field. (Nathan Rothdiener)

Gm 2 v. Strafford won 9-8 Sydney Julien struck out 4 in the winning effort...Julien also recorded a hit...

This was a good game for our girls. Strafford was a very athletic team. We held the lead most of the game but Strafford fought back late and we had to battle back to win it. Our girls were aggressive on the bases which scored most of our runs. Jenna Halbrook stole home to score the winning run on a wild pitch. Our girls are learning the importance of playing error free ball and for most of the game we did that.

Up Next: v. Morrisville 6:15 and Pleasant Hope 8:45 Wednesday July 8; @ Meador Park Thursday 6 & 8:30

Record: 7-7

Tournament Food by Stacie Mahoe

One of the things that really hit home for me while watching the Bobby Sox tournament a few weeks ago was the importance of planning for food!

Now the organization my daughters' were playing for was excellent at making sure the girls had something to eat after their day was done. Both parents and kids had some great food to chow down after the games were done for the day. However, I think we (parents included) could have done a better job at making sure our kids had "fuel" THROUGHOUT the day.

Why do I say that? Because my youngest daughter completely "ran out of gas" in the last game of the day. She was on the 8U team and had to be at the park at 9:00am because their first game was scheduled at 10:30. Not too bad. At least we didn't have to wake up too early to make sure she had breakfast and everything before getting to the field (as opposed to the 6U team that had to be at the field at 6:45am! Yikes!!!).

So we all (our whole family) had breakfast before heading to the field which was great. But because my daughter's 8U team was coming from the loser's bracket, they weren't going to have a short day unless they lost quick.

They didn't lose quick.

In fact, they won their first game and had to play again right after. I'm not complaining. I love to see my kids play, but it meant that there was NO time for going back to the tent to eat.

They ended up winning that game too which forced an "if necessary." Cool! Except for the fact that the "if necessary" game had to be played down the road at another park and the team had just an hour to get there. Again, not enough time to get all the girls under a tent to sit and get some food in their bellies.

About half way through that 3rd game of the day, I noticed how hungry I was! You see, I my 3 daughters were playing in 3 different age divisions and, every other game, I was running back and forth between the 2 fields trying to catch at least parts of all my daughter's games. Between going back and forth and trying to take pictures during the games, I never really stopped to grab food and by the middle of that 3rd 8U game, I was starving (and I wasn't even in the sun playing or coaching).

Yes, I was driving back and forth (in an air conditioned car), but the rest of my time was spent under a tent in the shade with the camera in my hand...and I could sit down any time I wanted. I can only imagine what my daughter felt like after having been on the field for 3 straight games.

Right about the time I realized I was hungry I heard my daughter's coach letting the players know who was going to go where on the next defense (there are minimum play rules in Bobby Sox). Then I heard my daughter ask one of the coaches if she's going to stay in or go out. The coach told her that she was going to be playing the whole game. She burst into tears (a strange reaction to getting an entire game of playing time right?).

Of course, the coach asked her what was wrong and she cried, "I'm tired." The thought that immediately crossed my mind when I heard that was that she was probably starving too!

I'm pretty sure part of her exhaustion was due to the fact that she hadn't eaten much since breakfast that morning and it was already after 2:30pm. That's a long time not to eat when your in the Hawaiian sun burning your energy playing softball game after softball game after softball game.

3 games in one day is already a lot for 8U, but throw in lack of "fuel" for the body and it becomes even tougher. I know many people's first reaction to crying and taking yourself out of the game is not necessarily positive - what kind of softball player does that anyway?

But I have to admit, as a coach, I'd rather have a player tell me that they're sub-par so I can put someone else in that is more fresh and ready, than go out there anyway, not feeling well and play terrible ... AND risk getting seriously hurt or more sick.

Sometimes it's just not smart to keep pushing. As and athlete, as a parent, and as a coach, we need to realize when that is...even though it can be a very tough line to define at times.

So, do you have a tournament food plan? The best way to make sure you have "good" fuel for your players (not just packaged junk food) is to prepare ahead of time. It's true you may end up with more than you need (if your team loses sooner than expected), but it certainly beats not having enough - especially when the well being of our kids are at stake.

My 5 Favorite Foods for Softball Players

by Coach Becky Wittenburg:
1. Whole grains- Whole grain food such as cereal, bagels, pasta, and bread give good, long-lasting energy to the whole body. As the most important food group, athletes should eat many whole grain carbohydrates before an event.

2. Peanut butter- Peanut butter is a good source of protein and essential fats, and it is easy to carry and eat on the go. Other protein sources will work as well, such as lean meat or dairy; the important thing is to get adequate protein before and after a work out. Protein helps the body in maintaining aerobic metabolism instead of anaerobic metabolism, which prevents the body from taking protein from lean tissue. Adequate protein speeds recovery and helps in actual performance situations.

3. Fresh fruits and Vegetables- Fresh produce is a great way to get vitamins and minerals that help the body function as normal. They are usually fat-free and contain lots of energy for the body to use during exercise. Some fruits, such as bananas, contain potassium, a mineral that regulates water levels in the body and stabilizes muscle contraction. Low potassium levels can lead to muscle cramps and fatigue, so eating potassium-rich foods is a good idea. However, it is important to regulate potassium intake, because too much too quickly can lead to a heart attack. Athletes should take in 435 milligrams of potassium for every hour they exercise.
While potassium does not aid in actual performance, it speeds recovery and should be considered as one of the most important supplements to an exercise program.

4. Calcium-Rich Foods- Foods such as cheese, yogurt, and milk contain necessary calcium, which creates strong bones and protects athletes from injury. These dairy products are also a good source of protein, but they should be eaten well before an event, as they take some time to process. If the body does not tolerate dairy well, supplements should be included to ensure that athletes receive the recommended daily intake of 1000 milligrams. As an example, a cup of skim milk provides about 300 milligrams of calcium.

5. Fiber-Rich Foods- Fiber is the nutritional component that keeps athletes full and regulates the digestive tract. Many of the foods already mentioned include fiber, but it is important for coaches to know which foods help athletes regulate fiber levels. Examples of fiber-rich foods include whole grains, apples, berries, almonds, and legumes. A simple way to determine the necessary amount of fiber is to add 5 to the athlete's age. For example, a 10-year-old athlete needs about 15 grams of fiber daily. After the age of 15, athletes need 20-25 grams of fiber a day.

Game 1 v. Springfield Shox L 6-4;

Game 2 v. Ozark Crush L 4-1;
Hits: Delpha Miller; Haley Rauch; Taylor Sechler;
We continued good pitching and defense, the Crush just did a better job tonight. We struggled getting through the lineup the first time. I think had we been able to get through earlier we would have had a different outcome. (Jamie Halbrook)

This was a good tournament for our girls. They did a wonderful job. They fought hard to win some games in some incredible heat. We faced some tough competition and learned a great deal about ourselves as players and as a team. We got our bats going and got some big hits and that carried over to make some big plays in the field. I'm so proud of the way they played and how they looked to get better every inning. Thank You

My wonderful wife has reminded me of something where I usually fail. THANK YOU!

As we reach the half-way point of the season, I want to take a moment to say thanks.

First, Thank you to the Lord for all of the many talents the Bolivar Softball Club is so fortunate to enjoy and for the safety and protection He has provided. The Lord has blessed each and every one of us. It is AWESOME to serve such a mighty and loving Savior.

Secondly, Thank you to my best friend and soulmate for being such an integral part of the coaching and administration of the Club.

Next, Thank you to the coaches for their endless, tireless, and many times thankless work. You are all doing a good job, and the fruits of your work will be seen in the form of strikes, hits, outs, wins, and more importantly, successful young ladies in life.

Thank you to the fundraising committee for the behind the scenes work and the many ideas for keeping costs down and raising money. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Relay for Life and to Greg Jaeger for his hard work putting everything together for the first time. Thanks to each and every member of the Fundraising Committee for orchestrating all of the events this season.

Thank you to the players for your dedication to becoming the best softball player you can become. We have a GREAT group of girls and I am proud to be a part of your lives. If the first half of the season is not what you have wanted it to be, make a decision right now to turn it around, have fun, and do your best at every practice and game. Hard work and dedication will pay off.

Thank you to the parents for the late nights, sweating while you just sit and watch, and for your commitment of helping your daughter participate. Poor coaching decisions, bad calls, and your daughter not performing to your expectations are all part of the experience, just like good coaching decisions, fortunate calls, rain outs, and your daughter being the star of the game.

Thank you to each and every participant in the Bolivar Softball Club. I believe that we are making good progress. Best wishes for the remainder of the season. See you at the ball park.

Coach Jay

Game 2 v. Lady Chiefs, W, 20-0, Alyssa Kelley WP

We are hitting the ball much better. Brittany is pitching very well and our defense is solid. Any win over Republic is a good win. I am proud of the way our girls are representing Bolivar. We played good softball tonight. We won or tied every inning tonight which is a good formula for winning softball. We just need to take this approach every day and good things will continue to happen. (Jay Halbrook)

Game 1 v. Angels W, 3-0 Megan Elliott, WP
Hits: 0; we put the ball in play and they struggled getting outs in the 1st inning. Megan pitched a great game and our defense was good enough to keep them from scoring. They had a 2 out triple in the 4th but could not get the run across.

Game 2. v. Angels W, 12-7 Abby Toler, WP in relief;
Hits: Sammy Jacobson, Jaelyn Halbrook (double).

The Angels had a tough time throwing strikes and we had 16 walks or HBP; We were able to score 6 in the top of the last inning to come from behind and give ourselves a cushion and get the win. The Angels feed the Kickapoo program. We are still making progress and when we start hitting like we are capable, we will be a force. (Jay Halbrook)

We are also playing outstanding defense. We are learning what to do to win and playing very hard. It is difficult to imagine scoring 54 runs on 67 hits regardless of the age level or division (Jamie Halbrook).

Softball Nutrition Tips by Marc Dagenais

Softball Nutrition Tips to Perform at Your Best!
by Marc Dagenais

Here are a few softball nutrition tips to be at your best on the field:

- Drink a lot of water. You’ve heard that hundreds of time for a good reason: water does wonder to the body. You should always carry a bottle of water with you. As a rule of thumb, try to have at least 7-8 glasses of water a day.

- Coffee increases alertness. Every sports nutritionist will tell you that coffee dehydrates and that it should be consumed in moderation. However, taken in moderation, coffee can help you increase performance because it increases your alertness. Sharp alertness is crucial to react quickly defensively or read the trajectory of a pitch and decide whether or not you want to swing at it when you are at the plate.

- Don’t over do energy drinks like Red Bull; they are quick fixes. Try not to become dependant. They are full of chemicals that your body doesn’t like.

- Go for Sports drinks like Gatorade and Powerade. They are designed for athletes and have been engineered not only to hydrate but also to provide real energy (carbohydrates) and replace electrolytes. You should definitely consider taking sports drinks especially if you are going to quite active for more than 90 minutes.

- Never go hungry! Softball requires mental sharpness, alertness and quick judgment to perform. Your brain lives off blood glucose exclusively. Blood glucose is sugar or carbohydrates circulating in your bloodstreams. When you are hungry, your blood glucose is low which means that you have a low functioning brain and reduced mental sharpness, alertness and judgment. This is especially important when you play several games in a day. Make sure to feed yourself on a regular basis.

- Coffee, sodas, juice and tea don’t count! As you know, you need to keep yourself well-hydrated and these drinks won’t do it as they more are likely to do the exact opposite: dehydrate you. To stay well-hydrated, rely on water and sports drinks.

- Juice up your performance. The simple act of juicing will take your physical performance to another level. Eight ounces of vegetable juice a day is the simplest, most cost-effective and powerful way to boost your health nutritionally. The best part is that even if you don’t eat all your veggies every day, you can just drink them in five minutes!

- Eat something right after you exercise. You should always eat something within 15-30 minutes of the end of your workouts, practices, and games. Doing so will accelerate your recovery because at that time, your body is starving for energy and nutrients to recover and regenerate itself. Choose high-quality foods. A mix of complex carbohydrates and protein is the ideal.

Nutrition really does make a difference when you play lots of game in a short period of time...

AnnaMarie McGlone lead with Patriots with 2 singles and a double. We put the ball in play well and capitalized on errors by their defense. We played defense well. Coach Nathan Rothdiener

Storm/Revolution and Freedom update

HS - Record 1-3

May 27
First night of games we missed some key players due to Track and Soccer. Lost to Walnut Grove and Glendale in the Ash Grove League. Addie Murders led the offense with 3 hits.

June 3
Week 2 opened with Buffalo and Bolivar got the win 9-2. Brittany Wood (WP) did a good job in the circle, walking 1 and hitting 1. We had no hits, however, we had some very good At Bats, ran the bases well and pushed across enough to get an important win.

Game 2: L - 10-0 to Pleasant Hope. Pleasant Hope scored 4 in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, and 4 in the 6th to end the game. We put the ball in play much better tonight. We finally had a full roster present and took some good At Bats. We put the ball in play, we just could not get hit to break the ice. Julie Magaña had the only hit.

June 10
Storms ended the night with Bolivar trailing 5-2 to Aurora

Up next - Bolivar @ Ash Grove v. Marionville and Monett.

Freedom (14U) Record 2-4

June 1 @ Meador Park
v. PBSG Diamonds - (W, forfeit)
v. Willard - (W, 8-6) Taylor Hedges WP; Jaelyn Halbrook, Megan Elliott (2B), led the offense. This was a good game for us. Willard is a very good team and had a 5-1 lead after 1 inning. We kept chipping away at the plate and played solid defense and got the win.

June 6 @ Republic
v. Ozark Express - L (6-1)- Summer Rash, Anna Pitts both had hits
v. Ozark Express - L (6-5) - Anna Pitts (2), Jaelyn Halbrook, Summer Rash, and Brandi Kolody led the offense.

We came out very flat in game one and did not perform well. We rebounded well for game 2 and took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the last inning. Ozark scored 2 runs with 2 outs for the win. We played much better and put ourselves into a position for a win against an Ozark team that played middle school softball and went undefeated in the COC this spring.

June 8 @ Meador Park
v. SW Wildcats (L, 7-4) Anna Pitts, Summer Rash had hits for Bolivar.
v. Ozark Express (L, 8-4) Kristin Parsons had the only hit for Bolivar.

HS and Freedom - We are pressing too much right now. We have to learn to play the game fearlessly. We need to take care of ourselves and not worry about others. When this happens, we will start coming out on the right side of the score. Both of these teams are very capable, we just have to believe that individually and as a team.

2009 Season Beginning

The Bolivar Softball Club is preparing for the 2009 summer season. BSC will have 4 teams again this summer and will add the High School team officially later.

Our Fundraising Committee is working hard, the coaching staff is working hard and we expect that will translate into a successful season on and off the field.

I would like to take a moment to THANK Coach Terry Rumfelt for her many years on and off the field as she has announced her retirement from coaching. She has made Bolivar Softball what it is today. We have been fortunate to have a coach of her caliber working with our kids for many years.

Good Luck Coach Rumfelt, Bolivar Softball will miss you.
